An exhibit of night photography

Coming in August - an exhibit of night photography on Mare Island, once a historic naval shipyard and now a mixed use development including heavy and light industry, housing, education, a shoreline preserve and many acres of land still unsafe for public access after the Navy’s exit.
I will have a few images in the show, including the one above, featuring the sail of the submarine USS Mariano G. Vallejo, which is undergoing restoration for a memorial on the island.

Details:
August 3 through September 15, 2011

Mare Island Historic Park Foundation Museum

Reception:
Sunday, August 14 from 2 to 4 pm

Mare Island Nocturnes features fine art photography, done at night, utilizing long time exposures, by photographers from all over the SF Bay Area, many on return nocturnal “tours of duty.” Chris Rasmussen, a member of the Save Our Sail Advisory Group, and one of the Jurors of the exhibit, has described the exhibit as “A marvelous array of images demonstrating the stark beauty of Mare Island, its industrious past now locked up in a great stillness.” We hope the public will come see these images of a seldom-seen side of the former Mare Island Shipyard, and help celebrate The Nocturnes Twentieth Anniversary - and five years on Mare Island!

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day was April 24th this year and I ventured out to the San Francisco waterfront in search of people and things in motion.
This image was captured at Pier 39 with a Zero Image 612, a wooden multi-format pinhole camera.

Tehachapi, CA
I’ve wanted to shoot this landmark along hwy 58 in the Tehachapi Pass on previous trips but the timing was never quite right. Heading out for a weekend in the Mojave this past friday night put me here around 10:30 and 2 nights before the full moon with clear skies - perfect.
Along the ridge you can see several turbines belonging to the wind farm.
18 minutes - a composite of three 6 minute exposures @ f/8, ambient light

The main building at the Oak Knoll Hospital complex in Oakland was imploded today, after years of neglect and financial misdeeds following the Navy’s departure in 1996.

The first hospital was built during WWII to support the Pacific theatre and later expanded with this 11 story building in 1968. The collapse of Lehman Brothers brought demolition and development on the site to a halt, and left this Oakland hills neighborhood with a huge fire and environmental hazard spread over 50 acres.

This image was taken during a period when there was no security or maintenance at the complex and scrappers, squatters and urban explorers had free reign, during the fall of 2009.
By the end of that year a bankruptcy judge granted relief to the neighbors and resumed demolition and fire abatement.
